Don Lowe First Selectman Column 03/23/2026
Our regularly scheduled monthly Board of Selectmen (BOS) meeting will be held this week, Thursday, March 26 at 7pm in Mallory Town Hall. The agenda is posted on the website and on the agenda is info to watch the meeting remotely via TEAMS.
The meeting features updates on the building projects in Town – School and Senior Center – along with the usual financial report, Sherman Volunteer Fire Department (SVFD) report, and the public works report. We will be discussing and possibly sending a Happy Acres Farm capital funding request (mostly fencing) to a future Town Meeting. In addition, on the capital project side, we will again be discussing and possibly bringing to a Town Meeting the power upgrade for the Sherma Playhouse.
On Wednesday, March 25, the Board of Selectmen will hold its budget hearing that features discussion on both the Town budget and the Sherman School budget. At this meeting we hope to set the budget numbers that voters will weigh in on at the budget referendum on Saturday, May 2. Previous to the referendum, we hold the Annual Budget Town Meeting on Saturday April 18 at 10am in Charter Hall. This is an opportunity for the public to ask questions and make comments about the budget prior to the referendum.
Our Hometown Heroes Banners have arrived, and we will be putting them up in the coming weeks. Just in case you’re not familiar with this program, these are banners of people who served and, in some cases, currently serve in the military. You have seen these in other towns, and I am so proud that we will be doing this in Sherman too. The banners will be attached to poles in the Town Green area, which is a great location because drivers will be going by slow enough to truly see them and take them in. Sometimes, in other towns, they are located along main roadways, and one goes by too fast to really see the veterans’ photos. There is a dedication ceremony planned for May 16 at 11am and that will be an event to truly reflect on Sherman’s military personnel, both active and past.
Do yourself a favor and check out the programs and events being offered at the Sherman JCC. The JCC holds amazing entertainment events and also hosts interesting guest lecturers. In addition, Thursday nights are open-mic nights and a perfect place to sing your songs or read your poems. I have been affiliated with several area open-mics as a host through the years and can attest that the JCC’s open-mic night is one of the best there is.
It’s snowing as I write this on Monday afternoon. I have to hand it to Ol’ Man Winter this year: He’s stubbornly sticking around!
