This Saturday will be the big Revolutionary War reenactment sponsored by our Historical Society in celebration of the organization’s 50th Anniversary. The event’s happenings begin at 9:30 am and go until 4pm. There will be artisan displays and related activities along with an old-time photo booth and even a 1700s fashion show. There will be a 1700s town dignitary in costume and also in costume will be one of America’s most famous Founding Father’s whose surname is very familiar to all of us here. Topping it all off, in the afternoon there will be a skirmish between the Connecticut militias and the English. I’m pulling for the militias! All of this is at the Historical Society’s barn and in the field behind the barn.
Last week, the Sherman School Building Committee, the Board of Ed., and the Board of Selectmen received a thorough update on the Sherman School renovation project. So far, things are looking great. All work is on schedule and there are no unpleasant surprises. Yes, it’s early, but we have indeed gotten off to a positive start. Additionally, the school year, now being held in its temporary school, has gotten off to a successful start.
The proposed Senior Center project is in full outreach mode with materials such as the site plan, floor plan, and other information circulating on the Town website, on social media, and in this paper. The first community forum for the project is Sunday, September 21 at 2pm in Charter Hall. Our committee will present the plan and then take questions and comments from the public. We will try to do this all in an hour so to not take up a big chuck of your Sunday. Three other forums are planned so if you miss this one, there will be plenty of chances to learn more.
The current Senior Center, for as well as it’s managed by Suzette Berger, is woefully inadequate as a facility. When I came into office eight years ago, I was charged with improving this situation and, while we have tried, unsuccessfully, to move the Senior Center to other areas of Sherman that are already built, it became obvious that we need to build a new structure. That structure and all its features and location and pricing are now complete, and we look forward to presenting it to the public and getting ready for a referendum on it.
The Household Hazardous Waste drop-off event is scheduled for Saturday, October 4 from 9am to 4pm at the John Pettibone Center at 2 Picket District Road in New Milford. This is a great opportunity to rid your home of toxic household waste items such as paints, stains, varnishes, and host of other noxious substances. More information on this is available at Mallory Town Hall.
Also, on May 4 in Sherman up at Happy Acres Farm is our annual FARM DAY! That begins at 10:30 and features food, music, arts, and crafts along with all types of farm activities including hayrides for the kids.
