I hope everyone had a wonderful Labor Day weekend. It’s a peculiar holiday as it carries both a sense of sadness for summer’s end but at the same time the anticipation of new beginnings such as schools opening, kids packed for college, cooler nights, and better fishing. Of course, it’s truly about the celebration of workers and all that they have done to build this great country.

This Friday, we are holding a ceremony at 7pm at the Scout House to commemorate and remember the tragic events of September 11, 2001. All are invited. The ceremony will be led by the Sherman Scouts and it’s an opportunity to reflect on that terrible day, a day where nearly anyone of the right age remembers what they were doing when those planes hit the World Trade Center.

We have been bearing down again on speeding in Town and will continue until thigs improve. This is a constant concern, but we are taking some extra measures to ramp up enforcement. I’d like to mention one particular spot in Town that has been brought to my attention more than a few times. It’s the three-way STOP sign at the intersection of Taber Road and Quaker Ridge. As reported to me by area residents, drivers often blow right through the STOP sign. It seems like an innocent spot, but someday, I fear, we are going to have a serious accident there. So please obey the STOP sign and also, watch out for those who don’t for your own safety

September is a wonderful time to explore our many miles of walking trails and open space here in Sherman. Deer Pond Farm off of Wakeman Hill Road is a magnificent place to hike, and, in addition, there are many Sherman land preserves on the Northwest Connecticut Land Conservancy maps that are amazing places to explore the rich natural world that Sherman offers.

I am still looking for board members for the Commission on Arts and also for the Commission on Aging. Feel free to reach out to my office (860 355 1139) for questions.
