I’m sending a big THANK YOU to Liz Haney for spearheading the Revolutionary War reenactment this past Saturday in commemoration of the Sherman Historical Society’s 50th Anniversary. It was a very successful event that went without a hitch as an estimated 500 people attended throughout the day. Liz began planning this in January and, along with an army of volunteers –Historical Society members, Sherman scouts, Sherman emergency service workers and many others – the day served as a wonderful reminder of our country’s rich past and the elements that made up the precious miracle of our great country’s existence.

On Sunday afternoon, in Charter Hall, we held the first of four public informational forums regarding the new proposed Sherman Senior Center. About 30 interested attended and, after a presentation of the building, the grounds, and the reasons for why this is a good idea for Sherman, they asked questions and offered suggestions. The forum went very well. There seemed to be complete agreement in the room that our current facility is inadequate as a Senior Center and that our seniors (and the rest of the community) could be better served by this facility. Information on this project is available on the Sherman Town website and the next community forum on this will be held on Saturday, October 25 at 10am in Mallory Town Hall.

The Board of Selectmen will hold its regularly scheduled monthly meeting on Thursday, 7pm in Mallory Town Hall. The meeting is viewable via TEAMS, and the agenda is on the Town website. Many of the agenda items are updates on projects that are ongoing. The Sherman School renovation is coming along nicely and, so far, no difficult surprises. The Scout House, as many have pointed out, looks amazing. We look for that project to be complete by the end of October if not sooner. At that point, we will have some type of ceremony and/or ribbon cutting.

Many people have been asking me about the progress of the closing of North Quaker Hill Road in Pawling which is a thruway that attaches to our Taber Road. Many of our residents use this as a connector to Pawling and Highway 22. I had phone contact with the engineer from the Dutchess County Public Works, and he said the expected completion date – barring untoward weather – is the end of October. At that point, the road will open, and no detour will be needed. However, he did say that it is likely to be closed again next summer (for a much shorter duration) as some further culvert work will be needed.

Thank you to whomever dropped off the rubber pickleball bracelets! I have a whole bag full of them and anyone who would like one is welcome to have one. Pickleball has become even more popular in Sherman with the successful construction of the four beautiful courts up at Volunteer Field. Play on!
