As summer draws to a close and Labor Day approaches, Sherman is still very busy. Sherman School begins its new year on Thursday, September 3. I wish them a successful start as they await moving into the new building after the Christmas break. The convocation was on Tuesday, September 1 and I always enjoy addressing the staff and faculty of the Sherman School. The relationship between the Town and the Sherman School is very strong -- and that’s not the case in many Connecticut towns. But our Board of Selectmen and the Board of Education work very well together and that’s a win-win for the town and for the taxpayers.
Here are a few upcoming dates: Farm Day at Happy Acres Farm will be held on October 3 from 11 to 4. This is always a fun day with tractor rides and face painting for the kids, live music, farm tours, and food. This is an opportunity to experience the excellent work that David Jellen, our farm manager, does at this 90 acre town-owned farm.
On that same date, October 3, the Sherman Annual Softball Tournament will be held at Veterans Field. The games start at 9am. If you are interested in joining a team – all skill levels are welcome -- there’s still time. Just reach out to the softball commissioner at shermanctsoftball@gmail.com. Also, the tournament needs volunteer help with umpiring, scorekeeping, food, and set-up. And, yes, you can help with these things and still play on a team. This is a terrific event and it’s a lot of fun!
This coming weekend, on September 5, the Weed Warriors are meeting at Veterans Field in their eternal battle against invasive plant species. This is an informal group of individuals devoted to removing these pesky plants in our parks. We will be there starting at 9:30 for about 3 hours. As usual please bring your preferred weed weapons, work gloves and sturdy shoes. This is a fun group of folks and it’s a nice chance to meet some new friends and do a good deed for your town.
Speaking of volunteering, we still have several Sherman boards in search of replacement members. The Conservation Commission is looking for someone, as is the Commission on Aging and is the Commission for the Arts. All three boards meet once a month and are terrific ways to begin getting involved in Sherman.
