The referendum to approve the funding towards a new Senior Center passed by a margin of 364 YES to 149 NO. The turnout was small, but the affirmative vote was slightly more than 70% which is quite conclusive and I am very pleased.
A better facility for our seniors was a goal of mine and a promise eight years ago (when I came into office) to those who knew what a lacking facility we currently utilize. Seeing that a better facility is now likely to be realized is an especially good feeling. Of course, the real work is set to begin. Our architect will be drawing up the complete plans. Then we must go in front of the land use commissions for approvals. After that, hopefully early summer, construction can begin, which is estimated to take about a year.
There is a whole lot going on in Sherman again this coming weekend. On Sunday, December 14, the children of the Sherman Church will present the annual Christmas pageant during the 10am worship service at the church located at 6 Church Road. They will tell the story of the birth of Jesus Christ. All are welcome. A special coffee hour will follow in the Fellowship Hall.
Also on Sunday, the Sherman Volunteer Fire Department is having its Pancake Breakfast at Charter Hall from 8am to 11am. Expect Santa to make an appearance!
On Saturday, there is caroling starting at 5pm at the gazebo in front of the Daily Market as the Park and Rec Commission and the Sherman Arts Commission offer hot chocolate and hand out maps for the First Annual Holiday Lights Tour that features 10 Sherman homes decorated for the holidays. Eventually a winner and runners-up in the holiday lights tour will be announced. But meanwhile, you will have an opportunity to take the tour yourself.
Last weekend’s Library Gala was a huge success and the Historical Society’s Open House with Santa was also a huge success. Along with that, the Sherman Artist’s Association’ Open House was simply spectacular. All of this was capped off by our first annual tree lighting, and we must give big thanks to Gary Goldring (owner of the Town Green), Meredith Cleary (Gary’s associate), and Rich Parente (Owner of the Daily market) for setting all of that up. The tree is gorgeous and we look forward to this being an annual event. Santa, who was terrific, showed up and so did the carolers from Sherman Church. I got to sing with them too!
Please notice all that is going on at the Sherman JCC, which has become Sherman’s Community Center with its wide array of tasteful and fun events! Along with its recurring Thursday Open Mic, this Saturday is a fun musical event featuring the Four Horsemen that starts at 7pm. The Four Horsemen are four of the area’s top singer/songwriters who present a profound menu of musical offerings to delight their audience.
Lastly, Wreck the Halls, the holiday show at the Sherman Playhouse, resumes over the weekend. This offers bawdy musical hilarity with a holiday theme. Don’t miss it!
As we head into this holiday, please let’s remember those less fortunate who may need a helping hand. Feel free to reach out to Lynne Gomez (860 354 2414) in our Sherman Social Services Department and she can direct you to places that can make good use of your charity. In addition, both the Daily Market and the Sherman JCC have donation opportunities to help those in need. Happy Holidays everyone!
