The Sherman Veterans Picnic is on Sunday, August 23 at the Town Beach pavilion from 12pm to 5pm. All Sherman veterans are invited. This will be a fun gathering and I regret having to miss it as I will be at a family reunion in Minnesota. I have written a proclamation describing Sherman’s appreciation for its veteran community and it will be read at the picnic.
The primary races were decided on August 11 and the Sherman results mirrored the state results in both parties’ races. For the republican primary for the 5th District to choose a candidate to run against Jahana Hayes the Sherman votes went like this: Chris Shea - 67 votes. Janathan De Barros – 24 votes. For the democratic primary for governor the Sherman votes went like this: Ned Lamont – 148 votes. Josh Elliot – 59 votes. Yes, the vote totals are low considering we have over 2,000 eligible voters, but primaries across the country have notoriously low turnouts.
After considering 13 proposals and interviewing 5 finalists, the Sherman Senior Center Building Committee chose Christopher Williams and Associates as its architect for the new senior center. Hawley Construction will be the construction manager, and contracts are being drawn up for both as I write this. This will be an interesting project, and when it is completed, will be a huge plus for Sherman.
Several Sherman boards are in search of replacement members. The Conservation Commission is looking for someone, as is the Commission on Aging and is the Commission for the Arts. All three boards meet once a month and are terrific ways to begin getting involved in Sherman. A quick note to say that the trails at the amazing Deer Pond Farm (Audubon Society) on Wakeman Hill Road are now cleaned up from the recent storms and available once again for safe and scenic hiking. Several Sherman roadways have had damage from this summer’s inordinate number of rainstorms. Public Works is aware of the places of damage and is busy repairing them in the order in which they can get to them. They have been extremely busy and I commend them for their good work!
Summer Camp ended last week with record breaking attendance numbers as nearly 250 kids attended. Kudos to John Wrenn, the Park and Recreation Commission, and the summer camp staff and lifeguards for a big success!
