Don Lowe First Selectman Column 10/13/2025

Sunday’s storm brought strong wind and rain, but unlike other Connecticut towns across the state, we didn’t suffer much damage. We had a couple of brief road blockages and a sprinkling of power outages that were restored fairly quickly, and that was it. I keep waiting for some statistics from Eversource to prove this, but I believe our tree cutting efforts over the last four years are finally starting help. Of course, I’ll write this, and we’ll then be besieged by falling trees on roads and wires, but anecdotally, things have been better these last couple of years. I hope to prove that with statistics.

Last Saturday was the celebration of life for a dear Sherman resident, Monty Clark. The event was held at our White Silo Winery, and it was very well attended by people from all over the area. Monty was a well-loved person and a lovely man. We miss him and wish Doris and their family all the best.

The proposed new Sherman Senior is doing a great deal of outreach as it readies the public for its referendum to be held on December 6 wherein Sherman voters decide if they want a new facility or not. I want to be clear that the next informational forum on this will be held at 10am in Charter Hall on Saturday, October 25. (I think I had the location wrong in last week’s column.) This should only last an hour but offers another good chance to ask questions and make your suggestions. I’m certainly among those who believe this is a necessary step for Sherman’s future as this building will much better serve our Seniors, and it will also serve the Town in general. We have been fortunate to have received some significant donations toward this, and we will talk about that and many other aspects of this project at the Town forum.

Sherman, like all Connecticut municipalities, is mandated to provide early voting. There are many good aspects to this, however, for small towns like us it gets a bit unwieldy. Early voting starts on Monday, October 20 and the Mallory Town Hall meeting room will be our early voting location. This means that we will not be able to hold meetings there until after election day on November 4. Because of our population, we are not really a very busy voting place; however, we are ready for those who show up. This is particularly difficult this year because the Sherman School renovation project has made us have to use other Town spaces for educational purposes. As I have written before, this will be a challenging year. But we will get through it!

One by-product of Sunday and Monday’s storm was some significant rainfall. We needed that. Also, one quick thing: Our Hometown Heroes project is starting to receive some applications. If you are a veteran or if you have a veteran in your family and she or he is from Sherman, you can have a photo to remember that person placed on a light pole in Sherman Green. (You’ve seen this in other towns.) All info on this is available online or at Town Hall in my office.
