Don Lowe First Selectman Column 06/08/26
We are excited to announce the opening of the Roger Sherman Exhibit at the Northrup House, which begins on Saturday, June 13 and runs from noon to 4pm. Don’t miss this: it’s well put together and a fascinating, true account of one of our nation’s greatest statesmen. The exhibit goes into detail about Roger Sherman and his life, how profoundly instrumental he was to the formation of our country, and why our beautiful town is named after him. If you can’t attend on June 13, no worries: The exhibit continues on the following four Saturdays, June 20, June 27, July 4, and July 11 from noon till 4pm. Thank you Sherman Historical Society for putting this wonderful display together -- a display of both our Town and our Nation’s history.
The Sherman Volunteer Fire Department’s Open House was a big success. This turned out to be a great opportunity for the public to get an inside look at all that the SVFD does for Sherman – and it’s a lot! Kudos for putting it together! The event was well attended and the SVFD even gained two new members.
Just like in past years, our Park and Recreation Commission is sponsoring summer concerts down at the Town beach. I will be listing them in my column as dates are set, and info will also be disseminated through social media and on the Town website of the dates and the artists. These concerts are a ton of fun and they are free.
Lately there has been a spate of incidents where solicitors for all kinds of services (solar, windows, roofs, driveways, etc.) are knocking unannounced on doors and promoting their work. This is not allowed in Sherman. A door-to-door salesperson needs a permit of approval from the First Selectman’s office, and I have never granted one. I don’t think any of the previous Sherman First Selectperson’s ever granted one either. So, if the salesperson tells you that the First Selectman’s office said it was ok for them to knock on your door, they are being untruthful.
Last week, Nicole Zegley, who clerks for several boards and commissions including the Board of Selectmen, lost her husband Joe when he died unexpectedly. Nicole and Joe have four children, and our hearts go out to that wonderful family. Having worked with Nicole (who also works at the Sherman School) I can tell you that she is an amazing person and absolutely lovely to work with. There is currently a Go-Fund-Me circulating online (Facebook) for her and her children, and it has been gratifying to watch our community step up and collectively and generously answer the call for someone in need. If you are so inclined, please give generously to the Go-Fund-Me effort for the Zegley’s. If you can’t find the link for it, feel free to reach out to me and I’ll make sure you have a place to donate.
We are a close-knit town. We help our neighbors in need. It’s a beautiful thing to witness and it feels good to live in a Town like this. Sherman strong!
