Last Thursday, Sherman had a severe storm event that blew over trees and caused road blockages and power outages. At one point, we had twelve roads closed and 55% of our homes were without power. I commend our public works crew for working so well with Eversource to open up roads. As a reminder, public works can’t move trees that are touching wires, so a great deal of teamwork with Eversource is needed in the aftermath of storms like this. We also received some goodwill from neighbors who pitched in. In particular, Tim Beatty used his own equipment and put in many hours with public works to help his Town. Thank you, Tim.
For the most part, the recovery went well and roads were open and power was restored in two days. However, the power restoration effort suffered a few miscommunications and the Sherman emergency management team, me, and Eversource will be going through a debriefing of the storm event to try and improve response.
Big shout out to Sherman fifth-grade teacher Bernadette Linaro and the members of the Historical Society for heading up Colonial Days last Monday. The event took us back in time and featured booth after booth of crafts and businesses one might see in the colonial days. Secretary of State, Stephanie Thomas, visited and expressed how impressed she was with the whole event. Ms. Thomas, who is quite a historian herself, also marveled at our Roger Sherman exhibit, which is shown for the next four Saturdays from noon to 4pm at the Northrup House.
Sherman School graduation is this Thursday, June 18 at 6pm. It will be held outside at Veterans Field. The school building project made this a challenging year for the school, but they certainly rose to the challenge. I’m proud of the administration, the faculty, and the students for how well they adjusted this year to a smaller space while the school is being renovated and repaired.
The Sherman Playhouse has produced a fine production of “Bye, Bye, Birdie”. Try to see it if you can. Meanwhile the music schedule at the JCC is spectacular. Go on their website and check out oncoming musical evenings.
This storm event along with other challenges has brought to mind what a wonderful town Sherman is. We are a close-knit town. We help our neighbors in need. It’s a nice thing to witness and it feels good to live in a Town like this. Sherman strong!
