Don Lowe First Selectman Column 02/23/2026

I’m writing with gratitude that we made it past this weekend’s windy snowstorm as well as we did. Huge thanks to our public works crew for the snow clearing and road care. I’m writing this column on Monday night, and I hope the public works crew can get a decent night’s sleep at last. This storm was everything predicted and a little more. The good news is that we suffered no power outages. Overall, Eversource reported more than 15,000 outages across the state. But we were spared.

I also want to thank our emergency services crew who were completely on point and in the ready during this whole storm event. It is a great comfort to witness such diligent energy spent to aid our Sherman citizens should the need arise. And the need arises a lot: on Saturday night, I was blessed to attend the Sherman Volunteer Fire Department awards dinner, and I learned that the SVFD covered 388 emergency calls last year! Throughout the evening, many of our fire and EMS volunteers received awards for prolific service. The sacrifice these individuals make, the time spent on emergency calls and training, is simply remarkable and we are all grateful for it.

Nearly every area school and college stayed closed for both Monday during the storm, and on Tuesday due to the aftermath. We had a delayed opening (1pm) at Mallory Town Hall. I’m not sure of the exact snow count by inches, but I believe it was 18 inches. All I know is that I sent a few photos of the drifted snow to my North Dakota and Minnesota kin and friends, and they were duly impressed.  And it takes a lot to impress those folks when it comes to winter weather.

This Thursday is our Board of Selectmen regularly monthly scheduled meeting. The agenda is on the website. As always, it’s at 7pm in Mallory Town Hall. There is a TEAMS link on the agenda for remote viewing.

I’ve heard of several heartwarming efforts by Sherman people, neighbors helping neighbors, who assist others who needed help clearing up from this snowstorm. We are fortunate here in Sherman to have so many community-minded and kind people among us. I could write an entire column and not cover it all, but I do want to mention Lynne Gomez (Social Services director) and Suzette Berger (Senior Center director) for all that they do to help Sherman residents on an everyday basis. They both go above and beyond to make life easier for those who might need a little boost. Thank you! We’re lucky to have you!
