Don Lowe First Selectman Column 10/20/2025

The Sherman Church will be holding a special First Responders service this Sunday, October 26 at 10 at the Sherman Church. This will be a service of thanks and gratitude for all that our First Responders at the Sherman Volunteer Fire Department and elsewhere do for us. Regretfully, I learned over the weekend that I cannot attend. I have attended in the past and it is a wonderful church service led by Reverend Loring Carpenter as the congregation honors those women and men who give of their time to keep us safe. I had hoped to say a few words, and my words would have described the little prayer I say every time there is a notice on my phone of some emergency action. Whether it’s a call responding to an expired battery that triggered a smoke alarm, or if it’s a call for help on someone’s worst day of his or her life, I always say the same prayer. “Please keep our people safe.”

On October 31 from 5 to 7pm the Town, thanks to Barbara Richardson, will hold its Halloween Bash on and around the Town Green and in the loop up by the Scout House and Mallory Town Hall. This will be a “Trick-or-Treat” event with booths from many organizations participating in all kinds of Halloween fun. There is no alternate day, so if the weather turns bad, the event is cancelled.

The Board of Selectmen regularly scheduled monthly meeting is this Thursday at 7pm in Charter Hall. The agenda and the link for the remote broadcast on TEAMS is posted on the Town website. Please note that our BOS meetings, while viewable remotely from your home or office, are not interactive in that way. To make public comments or ask questions, one needs to attend in person. You can only watch/listen when viewing remotely. Note that the meeting, due to the early voting set-up in Mallory Town Hall, will be held in Charter Hall.

Early voting is underway today on Monday. It’s being held in the meeting room at Mallory Town Hall. I have been here in my office almost all day, and I have seen a handful of voters come and go on this first day. We will be staffed – as per state mandate – every day from now until the end of election day on Tuesday, November 4. The Town is looking for staff for this as we might already be having difficulties keeping trained poll workers on call for such long periods. This is a paying position, paid hourly, so if you are interested, reach out to my office.

Please be careful this Halloween, especially you Trick-or-Treaters. If you and/or your children are walking, be mindful and don’t assume that drivers can see you just because they have their car lights on. Glare and dark costumes blending in with the surroundings can make someone difficult to see. So be careful and step off the roadway if a car is coming. Drivers – please go slowly.
