The Sherman Library is pleased to announce its upcoming art exhibition, “Japan 2026” – Photographs by Tony Gomez.  Recently visiting Japan, Gomez was struck with not only its stark beauty, but Japan's lively culture.   Through his lens he invites you to join him on this journey through the streets and landscapes of Japan.  The exhibition of these photographs runs June 12 through July 29, 2026.  The opening reception is Friday June 12, 6 - 8pm.  These photographs in the show will also be featured on the Sherman Library website: www.shermanlibrary.org.

Tony Gomez returned to photography after a 40-year hiatus, reconnecting with a passion first cultivated in his 20’s and 30’s through the study of fine art and photography at Jersey City State College, The New School, The School of Visual Arts and NYU.  During that period, he exhibited his work at Jersey City State College, The Jersey City Museum, The Third Eye Gallery in NYC and The Erpf Cultural Center in the Catskills.

Gomez set aside his artistic practice to pursue a career in business and engineering and raise a family, returning to photography as retirement approached.  While he does not consider himself a travel photographer, much of his work is created while exploring new places, where stepping out of the routines of daily life allows him to observe his surroundings with fresh perspective and heightened awareness.

His photographs are guided by emotional resonance, strong composition and a careful post-production process that enhances the mood and impact of each image.  Working with archival methods, Gomez prints, mats and frames his own photographs.  A skilled woodworker as well, he handcrafts the frames for his work, bringing together craftsmanship and artistry in every finished piece.
