The Sherman Library is pleased to host Marilyn Dwyer as she presents Revolutionary Spies on Thursday, September 17, at 6:30 p.m. at the Sherman Library, as we continue to commemorate the 250th anniversary of America.

George Washington knew he could not outfight the superior British army, so America’s first spymaster-in-chief built a covert network of ordinary citizens to outsmart them instead. Operating deep behind enemy lines, these unheralded heroes risked everything using secret ciphers, invisible ink, and double-agent tactics to keep the Continental Army alive. Join us for a fascinating presentation that separates myth from reality and the shadowy intelligence that ultimately won the American Revolution. You will discover the daring covert operations of Washington’s spies, including an elusive female whose identity has only recently come to light.

Presenter Marilyn Dwyer grew up in Bronxville, New York, and after college began her career in Manhattan, working in art galleries and then as an advertising copywriter. After marrying her husband, John, their life became an adventure shaped by his career, which took them to both coasts of the United States, as well as calling Scotland, Ireland, and Singapore home.

In 2000, they settled in Sherman with their two children and welcomed their third child two years later. Always drawn to learning and storytelling, she earned a master’s degree in education in 2010, finding the perfect way to combine her love of history with her passion for teaching.

Today, she teaches early American history in Kent, where she is happily creating more history nerds. Her students are not passive learners; they are encouraged to look beyond the legends, dig into the primary sources, and discover the real people behind the stories. Her research with students inspired her own exploration of espionage during the American Revolution.
